Qualaroo approached us with unusual recruitment – for the position of Director of Engineering, who would join their office in Krakow.
Qualaroo is a Polish-American startup owned by Scaleworks. The company creates a tool for UX Designers that facilitates qualitative research with users. The program is already used by, among others: Spotify, Groupon, Buffer, Lenovo or Booking.com.
To be more specific, the Qualaroo tool is SaaS that allows companies to ask questions to their users while they use their application or their website. Qualaroo may also be used when creating screens and mockups for the client, asking him for feedback from programs such as Figma, InVision, Marvel, AdobeXD or Axure.
Due to the rapid development of the product, the company was looking for a Director of Engineering. This person was to be responsible for technical development of the product and management of the team developing it. A candidate who has a, so-called, knack for working with people and is – at the same time – doing very well in Ruby.
The meeting with Paulina Wójciak, CEO at Qualaroo, took place in the form of video call (due to the fact that Paulina works at the company’s headquarters in the USA on a daily basis). Contact with her was crucial since the candidate she was looking for would work directly with her. It would be great if the candidate complements Pauline’s (both hard and soft) competences. And besides – no one could tell us about the company better than the CEO.
To help us understand the product better, Paulina also arranged a meeting with Michael, who was responsible for customer success. Michael gave us a product demo and showed Qualaroo from the user’s side, which allowed us to fully understand the company’s product. These informations are extremely helpful when telling candidates about their new job.

After a conversation with Paulina and a fantastic demo with Michael, we already knew who we were looking for. We started our work by:
Our sourcing strategy was based mainly on LinkedIn. The key to recruiting for executive positions is to find the right people and involve them effectively in the recruitment process. In other words – good mapping of the market and subsequent quality of communication with candidates is crucial.
Recruitment for positions such as Director of Engineering doesn’t show up as often as for typical development positions. That’s why they are always an interesting challenge for us, which requires very precise action in the field of: good mapping of the market, preparation of messages for candidates, properly fixed interview and conducting candidates through the process.
Due to this approach, we interviewed 4 candidates, and that’s exactly the number of people we presented to Qualaroo. Out of four candidates, the client selected one person and submitted an offer that was accepted.
Recruitment for Qualaroo was one of the most interesting projects in 2019. Searching for employees for management positions for product companies is always a big challenge, and finding them always brings great satisfaction.
Moreover, we like working on specifics. And there were many of these in the project. Paulina Wójciak had clearly defined expectations. We knew not only what technologies the candidate should know, but also what personality he should have and what features and soft skills he should possess to suit the company. Cooperation with Paulina was nice and based on a partnership relationship. Specific and with a clearly defined goal as well. All this facilitated the recruitment and smooth closure of the project.
Last but not least, thank you for another great project! We’re looking forward to the next ones.
